Steven J. Hanley, MBA – Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

Mr. Hanley is an experienced global business leader who has managed highly complex pharmaceutical and medical device operations with annual global revenue exceeding $1 billion. As the President of Covidien’s Imaging Solutions business unit, he led a multifunctional organization that included sales, marketing, logistics, manufacturing, as well as research and development.

Internationally, his track record includes numerous new drug and device product introductions and sales force expansion in Eastern Europe, China, and Latin America. Mr. Hanley is experienced working in different cultures and successfully navigating dynamic regulatory environments.

Over his nearly 18 years with the Covidien family of companies, Mr. Hanley developed a large network of business leaders and clinicians to help determine market needs, commercial potential, and product positioning. As a sales leader, he called on radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists, as well as surgeons in specialties including general, orthopedic, and OB/GYN.

Mr. Hanley is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Check-Cap (Nasdaq, Chek), based in Israel. In addition, Mr. Hanley is the Chairman of the Board of Managers for Daya CNS LLC and Board of Advisors for Kogent Surgical LLC both of which are based in St Louis Missouri.

Mr. Hanley has his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Marquette University.

Richard B. Dorshow, PhD – Chief Scientific Officer, President, and Co-Founder

Dr. Dorshow is an experienced research physicist and manager with over 30 years in R&D with a focus on developing innovative, business-oriented research programs. He established and led the optical diagnostics and therapeutics program at Mallinckrodt, constructed its Intellectual Property (“IP”) position, and is co-inventor on almost all the related IP. Establishment and subsequent development of this program yielded a robust product pipeline. In the process, valuable relationships with external clinicians were developed, validating the program and providing access to key thought leaders and collaborators.

Subsequent to a corporate strategy redirection, Dr. Dorshow had the unique opportunity to acquire the biophotonics technology, which he had built, led, and developed. Thus, MediBeacon was founded with the patent estate, market research, equipment, and other related assets from Mallinckrodt.

Dr. Dorshow completed his Ph.D. work on the characterization of surfactant systems employing light scattering. This produced some of the first results demonstrating critical behavior in multi-component complex fluid systems. After this, he moved immediately into the industry. At British Petroleum, Dr. Dorshow pioneered the development of a noninvasive optical detection technique for the measurement of oil & gas interfacial properties, needed for estimation of the amount of oil extractable from a reservoir.

Dr. Dorshow is currently a member of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, the Society of Molecular Imaging, the Colloid Division of the American Chemical Society, and the International Society for Optics and Photonics known as SPIE. He is a program committee member and session chair for the International Symposium on Biomedical Optics. Dr. Dorshow has authored or co-authored over 90 scientific publications and is an inventor on over 75 issued U.S. patents.

Dr. Dorshow has his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Terence H. Stern, MBA – Vice President and Corporate Officer

Mr. Stern is a multi-lingual, global executive with a broad record of entrepreneurial achievement across the healthcare arena. His leadership roles have spanned startups to large corporate entities. In 2010 Mr. Stern partnered with Mr. Hanley to develop detailed investment theses and financial models for clients in collaboration with healthcare-focused private equity firms.

In 2012, upon the inception of MediBeacon, Mr. Stern joined Dr. Dorshow and Mr. Hanley. Mr. Stern is responsible for MediBeacon’s finances.

Mr. Stern has held various financial and corporate development roles based both in the US and Europe. He was part of a core financial team at Ralston Purina International (RPI). RPI was spun off into an independent publicly held company, Agribrands International Inc. (NYSE MKT:AGX).

As CEO and Founder of Vetbrands International, he led the private equity-backed management buyout of RPI’s pharmaceutical business. The resulting top ten Brazilian animal pharmaceutical business was sold to Ceva Santé Animale (global animal health company with revenues of over $1 billion).

Mr. Stern is fluent in French, Portuguese, and Spanish. He has his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and a master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.

Steven B. Miller, MD, MBA – Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Miller is focused on driving a range of clinical and strategic initiatives as Chief Medical Officer. He has been a member of the MediBeacon board of directors since 2015.

Dr. Miller formerly served as executive vice president and chief clinical officer at Cigna, where he led the company’s clinical policy, quality, and performance efforts. In advance of Cigna’s acquisition of the company Dr. Miller was chief medical officer at Express Scripts where he focused on supporting government relations, leading the Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee, managing the Medical Affairs team, leading their Government Affairs organization, and interfacing with client groups.

Prior to Express Scripts Dr. Miller was vice president and chief medical officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Miller received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado. He trained as a fellow in pathology and research at the University of Alabama, Birmingham; nephrology at Washington University; and did a cardiology research fellowship at University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Miller has his master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Miller is a frequent international speaker and has published over 80 scientific articles in the areas of acute and chronic renal failure, transplantation, hypertension and medical economics.

James M. Harr – Vice President Research and Development

Mr. Harr is an experienced R&D professional with over 25 years of experience developing world class medical devices. Over the last 19 years he held various R&D leadership roles at Covidien, Medtronic and Cardinal Health where he was instrumental in the development and launch of numerous market leading medical device platforms. As the Global Vice President of Research and Development he was responsible for a multifunctional organization which included R&D, Program Management and Technical Services that supported 4.5 Billion dollars in annual revenue.

During his tenure with the Covidien family of companies he was a key contributor in developing the gated New Product Development process and pioneered the first major growth development platform for the company. His efforts resulted in a successful launch of an infusion platform that still holds the top market share position within the industry. Mr. Harr is certified DFSS Blackbelt, inventor on 45 patents and has received numerous company wide awards for both his technical and leadership excellence.

Most recently he has been working as an independent consultant providing technical and leadership services to medical device companies primarily focused on new product development efforts. His technical leadership, execution style and team building skills led to the redirection of numerous product development efforts to maximize success.

Mr. Harr has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Laura Vitale, PhD – Vice President, Quality

Dr. Vitale is an experienced Quality and Project Management leader with over 27 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.  Prior to joining MediBeacon, she was Director of Program Management for Covidien / Mallinckrodt where Dr. Vitale led large teams focused on development of products to treat pain as well as autoimmune and rare diseases.

Throughout her 24 years with Covidien / Mallinckrodt, Dr. Vitale held various positions that enable her to meet the unique needs of MediBeacon.  These roles include Quality Control Sr. Manager, Logistics Manager, Marketing Leader, and R&D Product Development Project Director.  She was instrumental in creating the pharmaceutical division Project Management Organization and has won many awards for excellence in team leadership.

Dr. Vitale has her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Eastern Illinois University, her master’s degree in Engineering and Policy from Washington University in St. Louis, and a PhD in Business Administration with a specialization in Project Management from Northcentral University in Prescott Valley Arizona. Her dissertation was entitled “Project Structure and Success in Pharmaceutical Project Management: A Qualitative Multiple Case Study”.  She also holds a PMP certification through Project Management Institute.

Christine R. Cooke, JD – Corporate Attorney

Ms. Cooke is an Intellectual Property lawyer with over 12 years of experience in developing global patent and lifecycle management strategies for clients in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device industries.

Ms. Cooke worked at Covidien from 2004 to 2013 focusing on Intellectual Property for the Pharmaceutical Division. During her nearly 10 years with Covidien, she collaborated with business leaders on numerous IP and Regulatory strategies, assessed risks relating to product and process development, and supported due diligence efforts for potential acquisitions and divestitures.

Prior to joining Covidien, Ms. Cooke was an associate at Mayer Brown and Dentons US in Chicago, Illinois. Her law firm experience includes assisting in counseling clients on all aspects of intellectual property protection including the validity and enforceability of patents, portfolio management, patent prosecution and infringement risk analysis, trademark clearances, managing and supporting patent and trade dress infringement litigation teams, and drafting technology-related agreements.

Ms. Cooke is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and she holds a Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University – College of Law.

Stuart L. Goldstein, MD, is Clark D. West Endowed Chair, Professor of Pediatrics, and the Director of the Center for Acute Care Nephrology (CACN) at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The CACN’s mission is to serve as a nexus for all clinical, translational and outcomes research for children with, or at-risk for acute kidney injury (AKI).

Dr. Goldstein has a strong record of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration with cardiologists, intensivists and emergency center physicians. He developed and validated the pediatric modified RIFLE (pRIFLE) AKI criteria and was the Principal Investigator on the multi-national Assessment of Worldwide AKI, Renal angina and Epidemiology (AWARE) study. He was one of two pediatric work group members for the KDIGO International AKI Guideline Work Group and has served on the KDOQI Hemodialysis Adequacy, Vascular Access and Pediatric Nutrition Guideline Work Groups.

Dr. Goldstein established the Prospective Pediatric AKI Research Group (ppAKI-RG) consortium to focus on multi-centered research studies that are dedicated to understanding and treating AKI in pediatric patients. The ppAKI-RG is comprised of 52 centers from around the world with the goal of improving outcomes for the child with or at-risk for AKI.

Dr. Goldstein is also a recognized educator; he has developed the only pediatric specific acute care nephrology sub-specialty fellowship with graduates who are now leaders in the field of pediatric AKI. He has written over 250 journal articles and is a Co-Editor of the textbooks, Pediatric Nephrology and Critical Care Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy in Children.

Dr. Goldstein received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at The Children’s Hospital in Boston Massachusetts.

Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD, FASN Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School

Dr. Bonventre is Samuel A. Levine Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School. He is also Chief of the Renal Division of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Chief of the BioMedical Engineering Division at the BWH, and former Associate Director and then Co-Director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Dr. Bonventre is Past-President of the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Bonventre received his BS with distinction from Cornell in 1970 in Engineering Physics and MD and Ph.D. degrees in Biophysics from Harvard University in 1976 and 1979, respectively. He has honorary doctorate degrees from Mt. Saint Mary’s College and from the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology in Norway.

His research focuses primarily on the study of kidney injury and repair, with special emphasis on the role of biomarkers, inflammation and stem cells. Dr. Bonventre has received two MERIT awards from the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive Disorders. He has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is editor of Seminars in Nephrology. He serves as an advisor to many academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies. He is co-founder of Patientkeeper, Inc and Pacific Biosciences Inc.

Dr. Bonventre is past-president of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont affiliate and has received that chapter’s Outstanding Physician Award. He is a founder and member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Biology Research Institute and is an Emeritus member of the Board of Advisors of the Dean, School of Engineering of Cornell University.

Joseph V. Nally, MD, Director, Center for Chronic Kidney Disease, Cleveland Clinic

Dr. Nally is the Director of the Center for Chronic Kidney Disease at the Cleveland Clinic, and Clinical Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Nally is a board-certified nephrologist in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension within the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Nally received his MD degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, trained in Internal Medicine at the OSU Hospitals in Columbus, Ohio, and trained in Nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Dr. Nally is currently an NIH/NIDDK funded principal investigator. His current grant is entitled “Navigating the Challenges of CKD.”

He served as a member of the Renal/ESRD Steering committee of the National Quality Forum. Dr. Nally served the National Kidney Foundation on the Medical Advisory Board and as Vice Chair of Public Policy for the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) program. Dr. Nally regularly publishes and presents at nephrology meetings. His interests include chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and renovascular disease.

Richard J. Solomon, MD, FASN, FACP, Director, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Fletcher Allen Health Care

Dr. Solomon is Patrick Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and the Director of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Fletcher Allen Health Care, in Burlington, Vermont.

Dr. Solomon received his MD degree from Yale Medical School, trained in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and Nephrology at Harvard Medical School.

He is interested in acute kidney injury and in particular, prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) and has been the principle investigator for a number of important trials in CIN prevention.

Dr. Solomon is a frequent reviewer for journals in Nephrology, Cardiology, and Radiology on the subject of acute kidney injury. He is a member of a number of Data Safety and monitoring Boards for national trials. Dr. Solomon is a member of the NIH consortium for biomarkers of kidney injury.

Phillip I. Tarr, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Microbiology Washington University School of Medicine

Dr. Phillip Tarr is the Melvin E. Carnahan Professor of Pediatrics, and Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics and the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, as well as the Melvin E. Carnahan Professor of Pediatrics, and Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Tarr obtained an undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University in 1975 in biology and an MD from Yale University in 1980. He then completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle, before pursuing research and advanced clinical training in infectious diseases, gastroenterology, and molecular microbiology. Dr. Tarr was on the faculty of the University of Washington in Seattle until 2003 when he assumed his present position at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

Dr. Tarr’s early research was directed toward gut infections caused by Escherichia coli O157:H7, and how intestinal infections with this pathogen leads to the hemolytic uremic syndrome, an important cause of kidney injury in children throughout the world. More recently, his work has focused on the childhood microbiome, and the effects of gut microbes on intestinal function, including gut permeability. His laboratory has been continuously supported since the early 1990’s by the NIAID, NIDDK, CDC, USDA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

David A. Present, MD – Co-Founder and General Partner, Pansend Life Sciences, LLC

Dr. Present began his career over 35 years ago as a university-based orthopedic oncological surgeon, later becoming Chief of Orthopedic Surgical Oncology and Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. During this time, he founded Osteotech Inc., a medical device company which pioneered the industrialization and commercialization of bone and tissue transplantation and was eventually sold to Medtronic Inc.

In the mid 1990’s, Dr. Present left his everyday practice of medicine to become a full-time investment portfolio manager at Kingdon Capital and then Managing General Partner of Weiss Peck & Greer- Farber Present Fund, a 600-million dollar equity hedge fund, which was eventually sold to Robeco/Rabo Bank N.V.

Since 2003, Dr. Present has led his team in the discovery, creation and financing of companies in the healthcare and technology space. He was the Founder, CEO and Chairman of Palyon Medical Corporation, a medical device company with a unique and patented drug delivery system. In 2014 he co-founded Pansend Life Sciences, LLC, a subsidiary of HC2 Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:HCHC) dedicated to investing broadly in life sciences and healthcare.

Cherine Eldumiati Plumaker – Co-Founder and General Partner, Pansend Life Sciences, LLC

Cherine E. Plumaker began her career at Weiss Peck & Greer-Farber Present Fund as an equity analyst focusing on the healthcare and consumer industries. In rapid succession, she became portfolio manager and ultimately Head of Trading and Senior Portfolio Manager of the Fund.

Upon the sale of Weiss Peck &Greer- Farber Present Fund to Robeco/Rabobank N.V., Ms. Plumaker partnered with Dr. Present and became Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Palyon Medical Corporation. In 2014 she co-founded Pansend Life Sciences LLC, a subsidiary of HC2 Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:HCHC) dedicated to investing broadly in life sciences and healthcare. Ms. Plumaker received a B.S in Economics from Rutgers University.
